Promoting equity, social cohesion and active citizenship is one of the long-term objectives within the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET 2020).
Since its establishment, with the aim to provide evidence-based policy support to DG EAC and Europe 2020, CRELL has been developing different strands of research related to equity, social cohesion and active citizenship. In particular, it has been a leader in a flagship initiative on constructing a composite indicator on active citizenship.
Currently, in support to DG EAC and in collaboration with the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), CRELL oversees most of the development of the IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2016 with a focus on instrument relevance, quality and comparability. This work is accompanied by support from the European Commission to EU Member States participating in the survey.
In parallel, CRELL also focuses its activity on the role of educational systems and schools in the process of socializing students to become active citizens.
